Jenn:
"I've come to learn that theology matters. And it matters not because we want a good grade on a test but because what we know about God shapes the way we think and live. What you believe about God's nature--what he is like, what he wants from you, and whether or not you will answer to him--affects every part of your life. Theology matters, because if we get it wrong, then our whole life will be wrong" (10-11).
Robin:
"Being a Christian means being a person who labors to establish his beliefs, his dreams, his choices, his very view of the world on the truth of who Jesus is and what He has accomplished--a Christian who cares about truth, who cares about sound doctrine" (19).
Gayline:
"When I turned twenty-one, my dad wrote me a letter filled with fatherly advice. One statement stood out: "Find men that you want to be like and then sit at their feet" (24-25).
Brooke:
"God is different from you and me. He is utterly different. And that is utterly wonderful.
There is surprising comfort in the realization that God is so unlike you and me. The fact that he's not like us is the reason we can run to him for rescue.
.... God is not like us. He's strong. He's unchanging. His love is steadfast (Psalm 136:1). He is full of mercy. And he does what we would never do, what we would never imagine: he dies for his enemies... (Romans 5:8)" (45).
We'd love to know what stood out for you. Leave a comment and let us know!

There is one God who created all things.
God is triune: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
The Bible is God's inerrant word to humanity.
Jesus is the virgin -born, eternal Son of God.
Jesus died as a substitute for sinners so they could be forgiven.
Jesus rose from the dead.
Jesus will one day return to judge the world.

The "Gospel" --- This came alive to me this week here in Flordia as we visited our daughter.
We need to be reminded of this and speak the "Gospel" to ourselves continually. God is a work.
"But as I watched, I wondered, What are they [Amish teenagers after rumspringa] really going back to? Are they choosing God or just a safe and simple way of life?" (p.4)
"I want to share how I learned that orthodoxy isn't just for old men but is for anyone who longs to behold a God who is bigger and more real and glorious than the human mind can imagine." (p. 16)
"I don't want to read my Bible like that, but honestly, sometimes I do." (p. 18)
"Digging that involves studying. Digging that requires thinking and reading and grappling with sometimes challenging truths." (p. 20)
It's amazing how God works -- many of the quotes that you all listed are highlighted in orange in my book. Great minds think alike! Or maybe digging minds find the same things of importance.
Deb S.
Do you think I might have clicked publish a bit too quick on that last one?
"Thes" is "these"; "revewla" is "reveal"; "thorugh" is "through".
And my typing is pathetic.
Sorry.
Tim,
No one takes off for spelling!! lol
I have to say this is fun reading a book together and finding out what is impacting each one. I like what Debbie said, "digging minds find the same things of importance." I had a hard time deciding on one quote (after a couple of the gals had already chosen mine), but now that Debbie has opened the door for 4 quotes, maybe I'll do the same!! Just kidding Debbie. I'm just glad you are on board with us and enjoying it.
There is no genuine spirituality apart from God's Word. We need God's self-revelation to know what he is like. We need revelation to know who we are and why we exist. We need revelation to explain our purpose and the eternal significance of life on this planet. We need revelation to know we're sinners and deserving of judgment. And we need revelation to know the good news of salvation through faith in Jesus. Without the bible there is no saving knowledge of God.Without the bible we would not know or understand the meaning of the Cross and Resurrection. Without the bible there is nothing for us to put our faith in. (pg 57)
Let's face it without the creator to explain to the creation we would get it all wrong!!!
I too enjoyed the section on digging, Debbie! "We need to dig for rock." Hopefully that's what we're doing!
And to the girls, I didn't mean to limit you to one favorite quote, you could have had two ;-)
I limited myself!! I could have quoted the first three chapters without coming up for air! Good stuff in here.
Being a Christian means being a persodn who labors to establish his beliefs, his dreams, his choices, his very view of the world on the truth of who Jesus is and what he has accomplished-a Christian who cares about truth, who cares about sound doctrine.
Hey Brooke, Is this going to be a weekly thing?
My fav quotes so far...it's like Jenn said earlier, I could quote the whole chapter.
But one that I'll share is from page 8:
"I wish someone had expected more of me. Would I have listened? I can't know. But I do know that a clear vision of God and the power of His Word and the purpose of Jesus's life, death, and ressurection were lost on me in the midst of all the flash and fun."
Only I wasn't really having all that much fun.

Hi Stephanie,
There will be a weekly post regarding the book, but not always one asking for your favorite quotes :-) More often than not it will be one of our reflections on what we've read, and sometimes it may just simply be a question.
Thanks for sharing a quote! I can relate to the "flash and fun" that Harris talked about at the beginning of the book. The youth group I attended during most of my teen years did seem to be more about the games and the laughing and the cliques, than it was about God and his work through Christ and what effect that should have had on me. But then again, I don't know that if that had been the focus I would have been interested anyway. I feel like I would have been, but who knows? As I was not part of the "in" crowd or any of the numerous cliques, I often felt excluded and so didn't have much fun either. But I kept going because it was the thing to do, and I was looking for something to belong to.
I'm loving the book! a bit behind, but I plan to buckle down today and get caught up. I love the part about the Wise man building his house on the rock. Sounds so obvious, but was it? probably not. I love the parallel of our faith and digging down deep into rock, the ROCK. been thinking about what it would look like in my life to daily dig down deep.
Kate, I thought that part was so helpful too. Always thought it was obvious, just like he did, but it wasn't really at all. it's not just about building your house on top of a rock--that's as precarious as the sand. you have to dig down and put the foundations of the house DEEP in the rock. good stuff.
